Black Mountain was founded as the town of Gray Eagle.  Once the railroad made it's way here, the town was renamed Black Mountain to match the name the railroad had given it's depot.  The depot was named after a nearby mountain range.
Settlement flourished at the turn of the 20th century as people from all over the country visited and moved here because the climate and fresh mountain air made recouperation from illness more tolerable.  Northern businessmen loved the area so much some of them relocated their families and their factories to the area.  Several generations of families worked thier entire adult life making textiles in these mills.
Today, this area is known for its artist influence and outdoor recreation.  People from all over the country still come to visit for the mountain air and the beautiful views and scenery, especially during our spectacular leaf season.  Although the Blue Ridge Parkway does not have an entrance in Black Mountain, the parkway runs high above with entrances close by.

Outdoor recreation is an important part of Black Mountain's lure for residents and visitors alike.  Try these links for the most reliable information on our area's scenic Appalachia parks.
